Endocarditis and Heart Infections
Description
Infective endocarditis (IE) is defined as an infection disease generally caused by bacteria that affect the endocardium, mostly the left chambers. The causes and epidemiology have evolved in recent decades with an increased prevalence in elderly patients. IE remains a poor prognosis disease with a challenging diagnosis requiring a multidisciplinary management (Endocarditis team). The microbiology has also changed being the streptococci the most common microorganism. Although novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies have emerged, the mortality has not improved last decades (remains around 30%). In this special issue, we discuss clinical practice, controversies, and strategies needed to target this potentially devastating disease.
